ROLE & RESPONSIBILIITY

WanderEats emerged from a group research project focused on understanding the challenges people face in maintaining a healthy diet while traveling. Our team conducted extensive research, uncovering the difficulties travelers encounter in finding nutritious and convenient meal options. Based on these insights, I developed WanderEats as my solo project to address these challenges.

Through research, design thinking, and user testing, WanderEats emerged as a robust solution for travelers seeking nutritious meals. This case study highlights my process, the insights gained, and the ultimate success of the project. The project scope included developing a user-friendly app interface

Next Steps & Improvements

“America is one of the least healthy nations in the world. Who doesn't love burgers, our special Starbucks drinks, and indulging in decadent desserts? Most of the food we eat are packed with empty calories that make us crave more instead of consuming nutrient-rich foods that our bodies recognize when we have eaten enough. The benefits of eating whole foods instead of vitamins and supplements is clear, but which foods and how much?

How might we help people get 100% of their daily nutritional needs met through whole foods every day?”

This insight led to the development of WanderEats, an app designed to provide easy access to nutritious food options for health-conscious travelers, supporting their dietary preferences and restrictions.

"I have always been successful in changing how I eat. I have not been successful in maintaining that change over the long term."

Experience Journey Map

The journey map was designed to provide a shared understanding of the mindsets, thoughts, and emotions of users as they navigate the challenges of eating well during travel. The focus was on identifying moments of delight, tension, and opportunities to address users' needs and their pain points.

Behavioral Archetypes

OBJECTIVE

The objective was to develop a deep understanding of the diverse needs, desires, and behaviors of consumers within the food industry. By creating two archetypes, we aim to empathize with and better serve these consumers through targeted solutions and improvements.

OUTCOME

Through the creation of the Conscientious Consumer and the Easy Epicurean archetypes, we gained insights into the distinct motivations, preferences, and pain points of two key consumer groups. This understanding Informed the development of strategies and initiatives to enhance transparency, convenience, and satisfaction within the food industry. By addressing the specific needs of each archetype, we aimed to foster a more inclusive and fulfilling food experience for all consumers.

Archetypes Journey Map

OBJECTIVE

The objective was to create a detailed journey map for the two key consumer archetypes, the Conscientious Consumer and the Easy Epicurean, to better understand their experiences, challenges, and needs when trying to eat healthy while traveling.

OUTCOME

By mapping out the travel journey for each archetype, we were able to pinpoint specific stages where interventions can make a significant impact. The insights gained from these journey maps will inform the development of targeted strategies and solutions to enhance transparency, convenience, and satisfaction in the food experiences of travelers, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and fulfilling food experience for all consumers.

OUTCOME

The executive summary highlights the importance of food as both sustenance and enjoyment during travel, recognizing the need for travelers to find nourishing options regardless of their setting. By addressing the tension caused by disrupted routines and limited food choices, the summary proposes the development of user-friendly mobile applications and other tools to empower travelers to make informed and satisfying food choices while away from home. This proactive approach aims to alleviate stress, promote well-being, and enhance the overall travel experience for individuals with diverse dietary needs and preferences.

Competitive Analysis

OBJECTIVE

A competitive analysis was done to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current market offerings, gather visual examples of key product features and functionalities, and explore both digital and non-digital experiences to inspire innovative opportunities for new products and services. Additionally, the analysis aims to identify user expectations to better align future developments with market demands.

Concept Testing

OBJECTIVE

The primary objective of the concept testing phase was to evaluate potential solutions for helping people eat healthier while traveling. Each team member developed a unique concept, such as mobile apps and wearable devices, aimed at addressing the challenges travelers face in maintaining a healthy diet. The goal was to gather user feedback on these concepts to understand their effectiveness, appeal, and areas for improvement.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Conducted six end-user interviews to collect qualitative feedback on four concepts

  • HealthyAround: An app to locate healthy restaurants.

  • WanderEats: An app delivering healthy pre-packaged foods based on travel itineraries.

  • FiteBite: A wearable device for scanning nutritional barcodes and translating foreign labels.

  • MealPal: An AI-powered mobile app in a chat format with multiple features.

Interviews

  • Presented the concepts to participants during structured interview sessions.

  • Asked participants to evaluate each concept, providing feedback on features, usability, and potential improvements.

Captured Feedback

  • Gathered detailed responses on which concept participants preferred and why.

  • Identified the most and least helpful features of each concept.

  • Explored potential enhancements and additional functionalities that could make the concepts more appealing and effective.

Insights on User Preferences

  • Identified which features resonated most with users

  • Recognized common pain points, such as the challenge of making healthy choices in unfamiliar environments and the need for convenience.

  • Suggestions for enhancements

CONCEPT STUDY REPORT

The concept testing phase aimed to gather user feedback to:

  • Facilitate healthier eating while traveling.

  • Avoid allergens or unwanted additives in unknown foods.

  • Improve traveler comfort.

KEY FINDINGS

  • Exploring New Foods: Users liked the idea of trying healthy yet unfamiliar foods similar to what they enjoy at home.

  • Real Menus: Participants preferred interactive, high-quality, and current menus with accessibility options.

  • Translating & Scanning (AI): While translating nutritional content was valued, there was skepticism about using AI for health guidance.

  • Family vs. Individual Needs: Families prioritized speed and convenience to avoid fast food, whereas individuals focused more on personal health and enjoyment.

  • Different Eater Types: Functional eaters valued speed and convenience, while curious eaters were driven by culinary exploration.

  • Cooking vs. Dining Out Options: Users wanted flexible options to either order food, pre-order meals, or shop and cook at their lodging.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Simplify

  • 'My Cart' should have its own page

  • Delivery overview added to 'My Boxes'

REVISED SITEMAP:

User Flows

OBJECTIVE

User Flow Charts were done to map out the critical tasks of "creating an account" and "ordering a box" focusing solely on the user's journey. Each flow should represent different potential user scenarios, emphasizing significant tasks and decisions without getting bogged down by minor sub-processes or variations. This ensures that the user's experience is intuitive and efficient, aligning the app's functionality with their needs.

OUTCOME

Separating "main pages" from "actions" is a good approach, but some actions might be better categorized as secondary pages. For instance, it's unclear if "countries WanderEats delivers" is a page or an action in Flow 1. Including "no" options for decisions would clarify user choices. By framing each user flow around a specific task the user aims to complete, you could streamline the flows and cut down on unnecessary steps. For example, if Flow 2's main objective is to set up an account, the step to "view company policy" might not be necessary and could be removed to simplify the process.
